Online Hunter Safety Course in Michigan: Day One Success
A Guide to Hunter Certification for Kids.
Introduction: A Weekend of Learning
Have you ever wanted one of your kids to follow in your footsteps and ask how to be a hunter? Does your heart pump when you talk about hunting? Does your face smile when the other person finds it just as exciting as you do? This past weekend, I embarked on an exciting new journey with my grandniece, Bayliee. At just 11 years old, in the 6th grade, Bayliee expressed an interest in learning how to hunt. We jumped a the chance to start the Online Hunter Safety Course in Michigan, with me as her mentor.
My wife knows I love hunting. I think about it 11 months of the year (probably 12). I have had the privilege to teach three sons how to hunt. Mentoring and teaching the next generation of hunters gives my passion a purpose. I can’t wait to show her that girls can hunt, too.
In this guide, I will walk you through the steps we took. We chose to break down the process into manageable sessions and meet several times. I hope our experience is helpful if you are exploring the online hunter safety course.
Enrolling in the Online Hunter Safety Course
We opted for an online Hunter Safety Course in Michigan, instead of a traditional in-person class. This will allow us to navigate the learning process at our own pace, and she can ask questions anytime she wants.
Enrolling in the online Hunter Safety Course was a hands-on experience for Bayliee. Her enthusiasm for taking charge of the registration process highlighted her eagerness to embark on this new and exciting journey. The online course we chose comprises 10 units, and we decided to break it down into five sessions, covering two units each time. This approach allows us to maintain a steady pace and ensures that Bayliee absorbs the material thoroughly.

The Importance of Hunter’s Orange and Unit 1 Exam
One of the first sections of the course talked about the importance of hunter’s orange and its role in the field. Through helpful videos, Bayliee learned about the impact of wearing or not wearing this distinctive color. Following this, she confidently tackled the Unit 1 exam, scoring an impressive 80%. Her ability to comprehend and explain incorrect choices showcased a solid grasp of the material.
For a fun keepsake of our first session together, I gave her a knit cap that was reversible from hunter orange to army green and a hand-me down camouflage jacket from my boys. I explained that the jacket was worn when both Max and Lincoln got their first deer with me. And now it was going to be her turn.
Firearms Education: Unit 2 Highlights
Unit 2 focused on firearms education, covering various aspects of rifles, handguns, shotguns, and more. Bayliee displayed a genuine interest in understanding the mechanics of guns, including projectile distances, gunpowder reactions, and the intriguing concept of rifling. Her inquisitiveness extended to topics like recoil, where her questions reflected a growing understanding of the subject matter.
Hands-On Learning: Gun Handling
To complement the online curriculum, we engaged in hands-on learning, handling a few guns under strict safety measures. Emphasizing the importance of firearm safety, I guided Bayliee through the proper way to receive a gun, ensuring it’s empty and on safety before handling. Furthermore, I showed her how to safely grip my rifles and introduced muzzle positions. Bayliee demonstrating exceptional awareness throughout and impressed safety every step of the way. Later, we will reviewed firearm maintenance; and we would take breaks when I noticed her focus slowing down.

Helping a youth hunter succeed at the safety course involves providing support, guidance, and encouragement throughout the process. Here are some tips to help a young individual succeed in a hunter safety course:
- Start Studying Early:
Give yourself plenty of time to learn and get ready for the course. Use the study materials provided, like online lessons or books.
- Remember the Safety Rules:
Safety is super important! Make sure you understand and remember the key safety rules. They’re like the golden rules of hunting.
- Talk About Gun Safety:
If guns are part of the course, learn the basics of handling them safely. Always pretend a gun is loaded, even if you know it’s not.
- Go to Classes Together:
If you can, go to the classes with someone you trust. They can help answer questions and show you that learning about hunting is a team effort.

Get hands-on experience if you can. Practice how to handle a gun safely and imagine different hunting situations.
- Use Cool Pictures and Videos:
Look at pictures, watch videos, or check out cool illustrations. They’ll help you remember important things and make learning more fun!

Talk about your own experiences with hunting safety. Share stories to help make the safety lessons feel real and interesting.
- Ask Lots of Questions:
Don’t be shy! Ask questions when you’re not sure about something. It’s a smart way to learn, and everyone’s here to help.

Show that you can be responsible when it comes to hunting and using guns. Lead by example and be a good role model for others.
